Vice President Kamala Harris has secured a 10-point swing over former President Donald Trump in a newly released poll.
In the latest poll by Emerson College, conducted between August 12 and 14, Harris was 4 points ahead of Trump on 50 percent to his 46 percent in a head-to-head matchup.
Her lead represents a 10-point swing from a previous poll conducted by Emerson College between July 7 and 8, in which Trump led the VP by 6 points in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup, 49 percent to 43 percent.
The latest poll also shows that Harris has improved on Joe Biden’s position against Trump by 7 points compared to the previous poll, with Harris now 4 points ahead in a head-to-head matchup, on 50 percent after Trump was leading Biden by 3 points on 46 percent at the beginning of July.
When third-party candidates are included, Harris has improved the Democrats’ position against Trump by 8 points, with 48 percent of the vote compared to Biden’s 40 percent. Trump was previously leading Biden by 4 percent when third-party candidates were included, on 44 percent.
This month’s national poll included only those who indicate they are very likely to vote, previous polls included all registered voters.
Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said the shift in the polls in favor of Harris had occurred due to likely voters under 30 shifting towards her by nine points, with 65 percent of under 30s now supporting Harris compared to the 56 percent who supported Biden.
Harris also saw growth in support among over 70-year-olds, 51 percent of whom now support her compared to the 48 percent who support Trump. Last month they broke 50 percent to 48 percent for Trump.
Kimball added: “Independents break for Harris, 46 percent to 45 percent, flipping since last month when likely independent voters broke for Trump 45 percent to 44 percent.”
The poll surveyed 1,000 likely voters and had a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points.
Newsweek has contacted the Trump and Harris campaigns for comment via email.
Since launching her campaign in July, Harris has been marginally ahead of Trump in national polls, with every poll aggregator showing she is in the lead.
However, her position in the polls could change following the upcoming ABC televised debate, which is scheduled for Tuesday September 10, and will see Harris and Trump go head to head for the first time.
The previous debate, which took place between Biden and Trump on CNN in June, triggered a wave of pressure on Biden to resign as the nominee after he appeared to slur his words and lose his train of thought during the debate. He eventually ended his re-election campaign on July 21.
No venue, format or moderators have yet been announced for the ABC News debate.
It is also unclear if the debate will include live fact-checking. The CNN debate between Trump and Biden came under fire for its lack of on-the-spot fact-checking from moderators Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.
Trump has proposed two more debates against Harris: one on Fox News on September 4 and another on NBC News on September 25.
Harris has not yet confirmed if she will take part.
